Swaim Associates
has been planning and designing college health, counseling, and
wellness facilities for over 12 years. During this time, we have
witnessed the evolution of these programs from inpatient care
facilities for the sick to key components within the educational
process promoting wellness and healthy lifestyles for the entire
campus community. Our experience in the field of college health
and wellness has enabled us to understand the unique needs of
these programs, while recognizing that every facility has its
own specific requirements. The following are some of our projects
in this field.

The
University of Arizona Highland Commons brings together two diverse
programs, Campus Health Services, which includes Counseling and
Psychological Services, and the Disability Resource Center. One
of the primary goals of the design is to provide a separate identity
for the Disability Resource Center from the medical services components
of the building program. A three-story glass gallery serves not
only as a grand entry to the facility, but also as a display space
for various outreach programs provided by the departments housed
in the building. This element helps to draw the campus community
into the landscaped courtyard at the heart of the facility which
serves as an active gathering space for students, faculty, and
staff. The Highland Commons is one of several new projects planned
for this area of the University as a part of the master plan developed
by Swaim Associates.

$5.9 Million, Programming Completed 2003

Built in 1965,
the University of Oregon's University Health and Counseling Center
was originally designed for what is now an out-of-date concept
of inpatient medical care. The facility now houses two separate
wellness-related University departments: the University Health
Center, which provides primary care outpatient services, education
and campus outreach in health promotion and disease prevention,
and the University Counseling and Testing Center, which provides
outpatient mental health care and houses a state-of-the-art testing
center. Swaim Associates was asked to perform a programmatic review
of the University Health and Counseling Center in preparation
for an expansion and complete remodel of the existing facility.
Through an interactive process, the project vision was established
and the program was developed. Throughout the process, the program
needs were balanced with the available budget to ensure that the
eventual design would be able to properly accommodate the program.

of Arizona student health center space needs and expansion assessment
27,000 SF,
Study Completed 1995

Ed Marley

This
project involved a study to determine the feasibility of expanding
the existing Student Health Center. The goal was to identify the
space requirements to consolidate all health service functions
back into one common facility. It was determined that 27,000 gross
square feet of floor area was required to accommodate these needs.
Various methods of expanding the facility, including their impact
upon ongoing operations and the associated costs of each approach,
were presented for the center's evaluation.

The addition
to the Student Health Center provided more than needed additional
space - it symbolized a changing attitude and approach to student
health care. Utilizing a vocabulary of red brick and mission tile,
the addition successfully expresses the traditional historic architecture
of the original 1936 building. The porch is an extension of the
original building's roof form expressed in a contemporary vocabulary
of steel roof trusses, offering a cool and inviting refuge from
the southwest desert sun. The plaza extends out from under the
porch to meet the sidewalk, an inviting space for student gathering.
A "transparent" ground floor encourages students to
enter the building and experience the various health promotion
displays. The combining of these elements form a prominent gateway
building to the University of Arizona campus.
